Merino Wether Comparison Trial 2026 – 2028

The Australian National Field Days (ANFD), in partnership with Schute Bell, is hosting a major 2026–2028 Merino Wether Comparison Trial, delivering a comprehensive, commercial-scale comparison of merino bloodlines under identical management conditions at Borenore, NSW.

The trial commenced in May 2026 and running over three years, the trial will compare up to 500 merino wethers from self-replacing flocks across Australia, with teams of 10 wethers assessed for fleece weight, fibre diameter, wool value and estimated meat value. The trial will also provide detailed economic comparisons between six-month and twelve-month shearing intervals.

The  Merino Wether Comparison Trial will deliver a comprehensive, commercial-scale comparison of merino bloodlines, run under identical management conditions at Borenore, NSW. The trial provides valuable benchmarking information for breeders and commercial producers alike.

The 22 teams have now arrived on site and have been inducted. They were retagged, drenched, given 6 in 1 and Gudair along with foot bathed and lice control.

An even up shearing has now taken place and all wethers have been weighed.
